01. Why are the offered techniques of CP rehabilitation called the Adeli Approach or Adeli Methods?

As it is well known, the Adeli medical suit and the techniques, based on its application and using the same name, are of cosmonautic origin. Being a brainchild of the Russian space medicine the suit has not only a set of certain functional properties elaborated on the basis of its achievements, but also an appropriate name.

After the first space flights that had lasted some hours it got evident that they should remain of short duration if the problem was not solved with respect to elimination of the serious consequences of a long stay of a human organism under conditions of weightlessness and limited motor activity, – such as muscle atrophy, decalcification of bone stock an so on. Since the creation of huge space stations with artificial gravity, described in science fiction, is as far as it was at dawn of the space age, one should solve the problem on a much more matter-of-fact basis. As a result of lasting many years researches carried out by Soviet scientists in the field of theory and practice of the space medicine, a loading suit has been designed that was more like a sports suit than a space one. Nevertheless, bundles of rubber shock-absorbers hidden under a humble jacket and trousers have brought about a revolution in exploration of space, because a load, imposed by them to a cosmonaut’s organism while imitating the natural gravitational force excludes all the negative consequences of its absence. Thus, the way to long space flights has been cleared.

At the first presentation of the suit in front of Sergey Korolyov, the director of the Soviet space program, a tester moved his legs with so much difficulty supporting a powerful load evidently excessive under conditions of the natural gravitational force, that it did not make very favorable impression on the Chief Designer. He found that this clumsy slow model bore a strange resemblance to a penguin (Perhaps, he had forgot that this bird which awkwardly waddled by land excellently moved in its element!) and with harsh words characteristic of him called the tester “penguin”. Thus, a new suit that would make familiar the Soviet space science got its first nickname which later became its official name.

A suit, licensed as a device for treatment of patients with impairments of posture and motor activity of cerebral palsy origin, has principles of action in common with the “Penguin”, constructive and functional peculiarities, although it differs from it in the sphere and character of application. It is absolutely natural that being directly related to the famous space “Penguin” the medical suit for rehabilitation of CP patients, designed in its image, was called “Adeli” after one of the species of penguins.

However, this name makes a more profound sense. As the “Penguin” has opened an era of long space flights, “Adeli” is opening a period of applying high technologies and original decisions while effectively assisting CP patients.

02. How do the Adeli Approach differ from other existing techniques of rehabilitation of CP patients?

From a principal point of view the rehabilitation of CP patients with the use of the Adeli Suit is in many aspects like other therapeutic techniques widely applied and known – in particular, Bobaths’, Voight’s, Peto’s techniques and many others. All of them, as well as the Adeli Methods are based on a range of specially picked physical exercises. To some extent, regular training allows to a patient to compensate lagging in development of his psychomotor functions which is linked with cerebral affections and to work out correct motor stereotypes.

The Adélie Approach differ from all known therapeutic techniques in having a powerful stimulator, that is the Adeli medical suit which has absorbed a sum of achievements in the field of high space technologies.

As a result of applying an Adeli Suit that imposes medical loads on the limbs and the body of a patient and corrects his posture and movements, the purposeful influence on the damaged central nervous system of a patient increases abruptly and at this expense the effectiveness of rehabilitation intensifies in a noticeable way. Particularly, it allows to obtain positive results even in case of the most serious types of CP that respond rather badly to treatments by dint of traditional therapeutic techniques.

On the other hand, the Adelie Methods essentially expand an age-related range of effective application of a therapy in case of CP. While traditional techniques yield good results at the age of several weeks till 2 years, the Adeli techniques remain effective even at the late stages of the disease when traditional techniques cause insufficient influence or do not cause any at all.

Besides, the Adélie techniques give good results in case of rehabilitation of such patients that have had a stroke or a craniocerebral injury.

03. How effective are the Adeli Methods? Why do you think that the Adeli Methods are better than others?

The therapeutic effectiveness of the Adeli medical suit depends on a severity degree of a disease, on its character, intensity, on a prevalence of pathological phenomena, an availability of motivations to form absent or disturbed capabilities of statics and locomotion. Therefore, the Adeli Methods may not be regarded as a miraculous cure-all: cerebral palsy is among the most serious and incurable diseases.

It is quite another matter that by means of an Adeli medical suit one can obtain very high results in raising the level of a patient’s health. Clinical trials, carried out in Russia, France, USA, Bulgaria in different years, and lasting many years practical application of the Adeli Methods have shown that stable success in a range of ages from 3 to 60 years. While applying the techniques, a positive rehabilitation effect takes place both in case when the treatment has assumed a supporting character as a result of certain positive changes in the orthopedo-neurological state, and in case when the treatment has been stopped due to the absence of effect in the course of many years. As a result of applying of an Adeli Suit an melioration of different degrees: from insignificant to appreciable – is recorded in case of 98 per cent of patients.

So high indicators allow to attribute the Adélie techniques to the best ones existing at present.

Besides the fundamental difference of the Adélie techniques from any other existing rehabilitation method consists in:

a. activity of generalized influence on the structures of the central and peripheral nervous system which activity causes its high effectiveness, including at the late stages of the disease;

b. spread of a treatment response not only to the locomotive potential of the body and the inferior extremities, but also to the articulator muscles in case of different types of dysarthria;

c. painlessness and high degree of security during treatment at all ages, absence of detrimental aftereffects that could be a threat to the status of a patient;

d. high degree of the clearness of these techniques which stimulates patients’ and their relatives’ motivation to therapy;

e. possibility of applying the techniques not only in a hospital, but also in a polyclinic and rehabilitation and sanitary centers, and in some cases under home conditions.

04. Are there any cases known for the fact that an application of the Adeli Methods has been detrimental to a patient’s health?

Since 1994 when the Adeli Methods were adopted in Russia within the framework of the program “Handicapped children” and in the Euromed international rehabilitation center in Poland, no case has been recorded when a patient’s status would be damaged while taking a course of rehabilitation treatment with the use of an Adelie Suit, though there were thousands of such patients. In the highest degree it is explained by the fact that people who have not taken part in special thorough training are not admitted to any application of the Adeli Suit. In particular, some provisions of license agreements prescribing to what medical institutions the Adeli Suits are to be delivered provide for this requirement.

05. May the Adeli Approach be regarded as a self-sufficient universal means of rehabilitation of CP patients?

It would be incorrect to think that simple walking in an Adeli medical suit, e. g. for 6 hours a day, would improve the patient’s condition in an automatic way. As a matter of fact, the techniques represent a range of specially selected exercises, designed for imposing loads, different both in size and direction; combinations of them can be made only by an experienced expert because there is a need of taking into consideration very many objective and subjective indicators of a patient’s status and aims which have to be achieved in the cause of training. The patient should be prepared for his classes that the exercises with an Adeli Suit could turn out maximum effective. Mostly, it is done by dint of massage, but sometimes some medical devices are used as well. These preparatory operations taken into account, the Adeli Methods may be regarded as self-sufficient. Thus, they are basic in the Euromed international rehabilitation center in Poland.

However, general health-improving procedures are not superfluous at all: exercises in a swimming-pool, hydromassage and so on.

On the other hand, the Adeli Methods can be an excellent supplement to any existing techniques. The Adeli medical suit can noticeably intensify the effect of exercises applied in the traditional therapy of CP, essentially accelerate the postoperative rehabilitation in case of a surgical treatment, make the drug treatment more efficient an so on.

At the same time the Adeli Methods may not be ranked among universal means good practically for everybody. Their positive effect is not equal in case of different types of CP: best of all it shows itself in case of spastic diplegia patients, as well as in case of a hyperkinetic type which is the least curable under conditions of the traditional techniques. In case of hemiparetic type of CP, as a rule, any improvement of a patient’s indicators manifests itself in a relatively less degree, and as for a astatic-atonic type, an appreciable improvement of a patient’s status comes only after several courses of treatment.

06. Are there any restrictions on applying the Adeli Methods?

There are contraindications to applying the Adeli Methods which is connected with a specific effect of the medical suit on a human organism. They are dislocations and subluxations of chief joints, first of all, of the articulation of hip, and severe types of epilepsy that constitute absolute contraindications to the rehabilitation by dint of an Adeli Suit.

There exist less severe contraindications, such as: mental retardation that excludes carrying out commands, serious diseases of the spinal column and joints, pathology of behavior and emotional reactions, schizophrenia, hypertension, valvular defects and a number of other diseases when a decision is taken in a very circumspect way on taking into account a degree of their manifestations.

07. The Adeli Methods are considered to be the cheapest. At what expense is this characteristic secured?

First of all, at the expense of a possibility to use the standard version of the medical suit repeatedly in the course of a number of years. In accordance with the Russian norms the depreciable life of an Adeli Suit constitutes 5 years. On average, taking into account the outlay on a main medical means – a medical suit – the complete monthly course of rehabilitation comes to roughly 30-40 cents a day or even less.

If the Adélie Methods are to be regarded as supplementary, one could inquire about the calculation of Russian experts who have counted up that the economic expenses in the process of applying the Adeli Methods are by 40 per cent lower than in case of traditional techniques, – thanks to reducing the period of postoperative adaptation more than to a half after carrying out a surgical correction of deformities, reducing the duration of a repeated course of treatment, removing the necessity of applying physiotherapeutic procedures, as well as pharmaceutical compositions.

08. Where and how can an Adeli Suit be bought?

Nowadays organizations and institutions, engaged in CP patients rehabilitation, may acquire an exclusive or nonexclusive license to apply the Adeli Methods which serves as a basis for selling these suits directly in Ayurveda JS Co. In accordance with the provisions of a license agreement, an agreed amount of medical suits, a technical documentation, techniques of application of the Adeli medical suit are provided as a package. The delivery of suits is carried out in the course of 2 months starting from the moment when the payment is passed to the account of Ayurveda JS Co. Simultaneously with transferring the “know-how” being an object of a license agreement Ayurveda JS Co. assumes a commitment to carry out – on its training base – a standard course of theoretic and practical instruction with the object of teaching how to apply the Adeli techniques for an agreed number of specialists, picked by the licensee. There is a special tuition fee provided in case of training specialists.

In retail trade there are no Adeli Suits on sale for private persons. The authotherapy at home, although it be possible in principle, can be essentially detrimental to a patient in absence of a qualified specialist who would take part in an educational course of the Adeli Methods. One of the main provisions of the distribution policy, followed by Ayurveda JS Co., consists in excepting even a theoretic probability of doing harm to a patient using the Adeli Methods.

09. Where can I undergo a cure today?

The citizens of the Russian Federation can make use of free medical services in a rehabilitation institution where the Adeli Methods are used and which is the nearest to the residence of a patient.

The citizens of Russia and the former Soviet republics, as well as foreign citizens can be medically served for a fee in the Euromed international rehabilitation center in accordance with accepted procedures.

10. When will your Suit and Methods available in my country (my town)?

Being guided by a sincere conviction that the Adeli Methods can give real help to tens of thousands of CP patients, condemned to suffer, the Ayurveda JS Company, an initiator of the Adeli project, is ready at any moment to put an appropriate license at the disposal of any interested organization or any foreign citizen on advantageous conditions, to deliver an amount of medical suits necessary for organizing and securing the activity of the center or a system of rehabilitation centers to organize training a medical staff in Russia and anywhere else, to hold a presentation of the techniques and perform all other necessary actions, connected with their introduction into everyday practice in one or another country.

However, the Ayurveda has no practical possibility to invest a necessary capital in every country and is forced to wait for a real and constructive interest in this project from the part of local companies or private persons.

Therefore, the answer to this question depends directly on how fast the problem can be solved in connection with a local partner ready for serious cooperation.
